Does BIDEN Support Cannabis?

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that President Biden "has always supported the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes." This statement comes in the wake of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issuing a recommendation to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to reschedule cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III under federal law.

Jean-Pierre clarified that the administration's process for reviewing marijuana scheduling is independent and led by HHS and the Department of Justice (DOJ). She emphasized that it would be guided by evidence, and she refrained from commenting further on the matter.

While Jean-Pierre asserted that President Biden has always supported medical marijuana legalization, it's worth noting that the president has a history of supporting anti-drug legislation, including efforts to strengthen drug war enforcement in the 1990s.
