Both sides had around 120,000 men and 600 cannons each. Casualties of dead and wounded are are disputed. Before the battle Napoleon had estimated he would need to sacrifice around 20,000 men and then he could take Moscow, by which time he would receive more men in reinforcements than he had lost.
