What Did They Expect? L.A. Law Enforcement Finally Talks Zero Bail Fallout

Los Angeles law enforcement leaders are having what they call a "Public Safety Summit," where they're basically saying what most of us knew all along: getting rid of bail is like handing out free tickets for crime sprees. Flash mobs, or as the more politically correct might say, "large gatherings of youth," are hitting up high-end stores faster than you can say "zero accountability." LAPD Chief Moore and LA County Sheriff Robert Luna are putting on their serious faces and suggesting—brace yourselves—that maybe we ought to have some form of deterrent against crime. Moore actually said the purpose of bail is to make people think twice about committing a crime. Gosh, you'd think they were onto something, wouldn't you? To really rub salt in the wound, retail losses have reportedly totaled nearly $100 billion in 2022. Maybe, just maybe, people won't steal if there's a risk they'll actually have to pay the piper?

So, what's the grand plan now? Another summit, perhaps? Maybe with a new catchy title like "Building Bridges and Failing the Future"? The problem here isn't a lack of conferences or flashy headlines; it's the naïve belief that somehow humanity will collectively decide to behave if there are zero consequences. You know, because criminals are renowned for their moral soul-searching and ethical debates before swiping your car or cleaning out a Gucci store. So here we are, a mess of a situation that anyone with a speck of common sense saw coming from a mile away. But don't worry, more meetings are surely on the way to save the day.
