First and foremost, I love solving problems. Whether figuring out the best way to frame a complex legal argument when I worked in a law firm or diagnosing why my neighbor's truck would not start, problem-solving is an enjoyable way for me to put my gift of sustained hyperfocus to good use.

Sometimes, the seemingly most unrelated experience may be the key to solving the problem. For example, as a sniper, you must be able to deliver precision fire in both day and night situations. Wind significantly affects bullet trajectory and, thus, shot placement. In daylight and with optics, wind direction and speed can be estimated by observing the mirage or heat shimmer coming off the ground. However, heat shimmer is not visible at night, even with a night vision scope. So, the problem is, how do you estimate wind direction and speed at night?

During a night training event at Ewa Beach range, O'ahu, my long-distance shooting exhibited exacting precision while the other two snipers from my platoon couldn't hit the target. A scout asked me how I could command my shots while the others were floundering. My answer was, "Easy, I'm a surfer." He walked away, confused because it made no sense, but it will for you.

For years, I surfed all over O'ahu. Wind affects waves in either a good or bad way, which is why surfers are in tune with the wind. I used my knowledge as a surfer to make a very educated guess on the night's wind conditions. This is an exciting example of applying the seemingly unrelated experience from surfing to solve a complex sniper problem.

Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to you…yes you! If you are reading this, I assume you are a taxpayer. The U.S. Army invested a few million dollars into me with all the training needed to develop a sniper. Without you, I would not have been able to serve in that capacity, the highlight of my life, second to my family. To you, my deepest heartfelt thank you.
