It won’t be long before the beef steer leaves to fulfill his ultimate purpose in life. Each year we buy a beef steer in the 500-600lb range to raise on our farm until he reaches an appropriate weight for butchering. We’ve done this for three years now and each time we get a little better and better at the process, but the outcome has always been the same: excellent meat to feed our family.

That’s what our homestead is all about: using our land to provide for our family. We want our kids to grow up living the farm kid life and to understand where their food comes from. Keeping them involved, especially at this age, is not always the easiest. Throw in a camera and things get downright difficult.

While trying to move our beef steer from one field to another, and taking a lot of time trying to figure how to film it with the kids in tow, I realized that trying to farm, and film, and dad, at the same time is nigh on impossible. Two of the three is doable but all of them together… not happening. I don’t say this asking for your sympathy, I just want to offer some encouragement if you’re going through something similar. It’s a lot of work doing this and if you are struggling, well at least we’re in it together.
