Were 2 Crucified With Jesus? Or 4?

How many men were crucified with Jesus? 2? Or 4? How do you explain the apparent contradictions in the Gospels? How can both robbers deride Jesus in Matthew, but only one derides him in Luke? And why did the soldiers walk past Jesus to break the legs of the other crucified with him and then come back to Jesus who was in the middle?
