Study of recreational athletes: 30% became prediabetic when
following high carb high fat eating...
-when eating low carb: controlled their blood glucose perfectly
-those who ate most fat: had greatest glucose control
First study to link fat oxidation in muscle to
-more resistance to prediabetes
Also: FIRST STUDY SHOWING people
developing PREDIABETES without
putting on weight or
changing exercise habits
-Only changed their diet

Dr Clemente: it was crossover trial:
-2 groups: one group: low carb 4 weeks, then high carb 4 weeks
-other group opposite [high carb 4 wks; low carb 4 wks]
-results TRACKED WITH CGM

[very robust design as each group
becomes control and virtually all
confounding variables are accounted
for and eliminated]

Is this representative of all runners? probably very close...
-30% of runners on high carb will become prediabetic in 30-40s
In the 70s, we trained really, really hard
-finished the marathon in 3 hours...everyone left
-no one waited for those in 4-6 hours
-everyone was LEAN [few carbs]
Now: see people finish in 6 hours
