The beauty of the hippocampus

Neurons in the hippocampus of a Rbp4Cre-Yellow Chameleon X 2.60 (YCX 2.60) mouse brain. In this mouse line, a subset of excitatory neurons in layer 5 of the neocortex is labeled. Shown is a part of a whole brain cleared using CLARITY. In this mouse line, a subset of hippocampal neurons (especially in the dentate gyrus) and in CA2 are labeled as well. The white band projecting out of the brightly labeled dentate gyrus is part of the mossy fiber pathway (infrapyramidal section).
