Being masculine is an earned title. Some people just have it, some people have to work hard for it, and when you have it you know it and you know everyone else knows it too. Being macho describes someone who wants to be masculine but hasn’t earned the title. He has some idea of what it looks like to be masculine but he doesn’t know how to get there, yet, so he puts on a front.
