• Rom. 6:16 Millions today have not learned these simple facts—that you cannot be a servant of sin and Satan and a servant of righteousness and Christ at the same time; that if you commit sin you are a servant of sin and Satan (Joh_8:34; 1Jn_3:8) and not a Christian; that if you sin, Satan is your master and not Christ and that sin is the service of Satan and righteousness is the service of God.

• Rom. 6:17 To "wholeheartedly obey" means to give yourself fully to God, to love him "with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind" (Mat_22:37). And yet so often our efforts to know and obey God's commands can best be described as "halfhearted." How do you rate your heart's obedience? God wants to give you the power to obey him with all your heart. The "teaching" they were to obey is the Good News that Jesus died for their sins and was raised to give them new life. Many believe that this refers to the early church's statement of faith found in 1Co_15:1-11.

• Rom. 6:18 Being a slave in the ancient world meant being owned by a master. Whether slaves obeyed did not change their status as slaves, although it would affect the relationship between slave and master (Luk_19:20-26). The question is one of obligation. A person who has been freed from sin can act as though still a slave to sin (v. Rom_6:16), or that person can live as a “slave” to righteousness, as a servant to a kind master who gives great rewards.

Father, thank you for breaking the cord that tied me to sin and satan and renewing my heart to follow Jesus, wholeheartedly. Rom 6:17
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
