A federal judge has taken a stand against the unconstitutional encroachment on firearms rights just days before a new state law, laden with sweeping restrictions on public firearm carry, was slated to come into effect.

The new law, in light of the Supreme Court’s decision, designated businesses that sell alcohol as sensitive places, and by prohibiting guns in all private buildings unless the owner gave specific consent to allow them.

U.S. District Court Judge George L. Russell III issued a preliminary injunction on Friday, temporarily safeguarding the right to bear arms in specific locales. This ruling permits law-abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights in certain venues, including select businesses that serve alcohol, private properties, and areas proximate to public demonstrations.

However, it is crucial to note that despite this injunction, the new legislation will still take effect on Sunday, ushering in stringent limitations on carrying firearms in a multitude of other public spaces. These restricted areas include museums, healthcare facilities, school premises, parks, mass transit facilities, government buildings, stadiums, race tracks, amusement parks, and casinos.

The Gun Safety Act of 2023, which the General Assembly passed earlier this year and Governor Wes Moore (D) signed into law on May 16, has faced numerous legal challenges.

The recent court order, accompanied by a comprehensive 40-page opinion, reflects the ongoing legal battle surrounding this contentious law.
