I'm doing a series of articles for The American Spectator on the origins of the current crisis.

It's called American Despotism, and you can see these articles. If you go to spectator.org. I want to talk now about article number three, which is about the origins in the 1960s of the crisis we're now experiencing. I really believe that to find the roots of the current crisis, you have to go back to a whole series of events that are underway simultaneously.

There was the anti-Vietnam War movement. There was a free speech movement that grew out of Berkeley, the University of California at Berkeley. There was a civil rights movement which was steadily growing in the South in particular. All of those led by the middle of the decade to the rise of white radicalism, particularly with the students for a democratic society and with the rise of black power in the militancy, with the development of things like the Black Panthers.

So, in the third article, I'm really talking about the way in which the Sixties evolved. The kind of changes that were underway, things like the development of the birth control pill, the rise of freedom in terms of sexuality for women, the development of Betty Friedan's idea of the feminine mystique and the beginnings of a real women's liberation movement.
