The Tragic Optimism Questionnaire: Some Preliminary Validity Data

The Tragic Optimism Questionnaire was developed based on P. T. P. Wong's existential theory of optimism. In contrast to traditional concepts of hope and optimism, tragic optimism is rooted in the heroic and courageous stance of affirming meaning, faith and hope in spite of adversities, traumatic experiences and bleak reality. Results on factorial and concurrent validity will be presented. The implications of tragic optimism for counselling and therapy will be discussed.

Educational objectives:
1) To present the rationale for an existential model of optimism.
2) To describe the development of the Life Attitudes Scale (LAS) that measures the different components of tragic optimism.
3) To present preliminary findings on the reliability and validity of the LAS. 4) To discuss the clinical implications of tragic optimism
