Mental Health Disorders in Childhood

In this lecture, we will review Mental Health Disorders in Childhood to include: Anxiety disorders; Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); Autism spectrum disorder (ASD); Eating disorders; Depression and other mood disorders; Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); and Schizophrenia.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, being mentally healthy during childhood means reaching developmental and emotional milestones and learning healthy social skills and how to cope, when there are problems.

What is a mental illness? Mental health is the overall wellness of how you think, regulate your feelings and behave. A mental illness, or mental health disorder, is defined as patterns or changes in thinking, feeling or behaving that cause distress or disrupt a person's ability to function (mayoclinic.org).

How is mental illness in children treated? Common treatment options for children who have mental health conditions include: Psychotherapy and Medication.

Mentally healthy children have a positive quality of life and can function well at home, in school, and in their communities.
