On 19 March 2011, a multi-state NATO-led coalition began a military intervention in Libya. It was a violation of Libya's sovereignty and an undermining of its efforts to maintain national unity. Libya's leader at the time, Muammar Gaddafi, was working towards creating a unified and stable Libya by addressing tribal divisions and economic disparities. The NATO intervention, rather than aiding this process, disrupted the country's stability and led to ongoing turmoil.

Gaddafi had a history of advocating for African and Arab unity while challenging Western dominance. NATO's intervention can be understood as an attempt by Western powers to remove a leader who was outspoken against neocolonialism and interference in the region. Gaddafi's opposition to foreign military bases on African soil and his efforts to establish alternative economic and political structures posed a threat to existing global power dynamics.

Under Gaddafi's rule, Libya underwent significant economic development and social progress. The intervention disrupted the country's economy by destabilising the government and destroying infrastructure. Gaddafi's ambitious plans for water-management projects, healthcare and education initiatives were completely dismantled due to the chaos caused by the intervention. While the intervention was portrayed as a humanitarian effort, it's important to consider the consequences in reality. The intervention led to a significant loss of life and displacement of civilians, undermining the very premise of protecting civilian lives.
