In a noteworthy move, Mayor London Breed is dusting off a nearly forgotten 1942 program, the San Francisco Police Department Reserve Police Officer Program, to address these pressing issues. It's an intriguing strategy, trying to solve modern problems with old solutions. Will it work? Well, it's a start, and certainly more action than we've seen from her predecessors. But when your city is down by 600 officers, throwing in 30 reserves feels a bit like trying to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun. The program aims to station 30 reserve officers across the city for high-profile foot-beat assignments, a measure which, while limited, could still bring a renewed sense of security to local businesses and residents. At the very least, it's a breath of fresh air for those tired of the city's decline.
