Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson said something very important in his opening statement to the House after becoming speaker. He said he was going to decentralize back to the committees and allow the committees to make many more decisions and have legislation come from the ground up, not from the top down. I think that's important because when you have a very narrow margin, you have to have people talking with each other.

And the right place to talk is at the committee level. And if you're the speaker in this kind of narrow margin, you want to make sure that most of the pressure, most of the arguments are taken care of by the committee chairmen and don't ever get to the speaker's office. So let's you listen. Everyone send everyone in the right direction for a discussion, but then leave it up to them to solve the problem.

I think it's a very healthy thing to be doing. It's something that the longest serving speaker, Sam Rayburn, would have approved of. And I think it's going to be fascinating to watch Mike Johnson as Speaker.
