The US has carried out airstrikes in Syria against Iran-backed militia groups, following a series of attacks against US troops in the region.

According to US defence secretary Lloyd Austin, facilities bring used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and linked groups were targeted.

"These precision self-defence strikes are a response to a series of ongoing and mostly unsuccessful attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups that began on October 17," Austin said, stressing that the strike was not linked to the conflict in Gaza and was not done in co-ordination with Israel

A senior defence official, speaking to CNN, said "Iranian fingerprints" were all over the more than 19 recent attacks on US forces in the region.
