The Children of Sderot
I saw him walking along the hotel corridor, shirtless, dark-skinned, chubby, shoulders slumped, pace erratic, about 9 or 10 years old. It looked like he was carrying the world on his young shoulders.

Later on, I saw him again; this time, he was dressed, had a kippa on his head, and was in the company of 2 other friends.

Shalom, I said, looking at them with a smile while we all boarded the elevator. Have you been evacuated from Sderot? Yes, they all said in unison.

And how are you, I asked? One of them with big brown eyes looked at me, while another answered, pointing at him: The terrorists infiltrated his house… Another one added: And we lost our balcony to the explosions. And yet another: We heard many "booms" and had to run for shelter all the time.

Was it frightening? I asked the rhetorical question just to let them talk and share their feelings with this stranger, except in Israel and especially during crisis, we are a big family. These were all my children, and I am the mother or the grandmother of whoever needs one at any given moment.

Yes! They all said, it was terribly scary. I nodded, empathizing, asking again, "And are you happy to be here? (At the Dead Sea hotel) Does it help you?"

Yes, it does, they said. The elevator reached the ground floor. God bless you, I told them, may He strengthen you. They broke into a broad smile and said, "Thank you!" And off they went to their activities with their little kippas on their heads, showing their faith in our Elohim despite everything. They have been under the shadow of rockets from Gaza and running to bomb shelters all of their young lives. But the Hamas Massacre of October 7, 2023, was something else. Terrorists infiltrated the border city and their houses, murdered, looted, and entrenched themselves in the police station.

I went my way with tears in my eyes and a prayer: O Abba, heal them all from the terrible traumatic events they have experienced. They are all my children, the children of Sderot.
