Just how bad have things gotten in San Francisco? The city once famous for Tony Bennett, the Golden Gate bridge, and Fishermen’s Wharf is now better known for its uncontrolled homelessness, refuse ridden streets, and smash and grab shoplifting and car break-ins.
Nothing and no one are immune, including San Francisco City Inspectors, tasked with the unenviable job of ending the operation of unlicensed food vendors and cracking down on the sale of black market merchandise, often stolen from local merchants.
Many of the city inspectors have been assaulted on the streets, both physically and verbally, their lives threatened. The San Francisco Chronicle reported the inspectors have been pushed, bumped, punched in the stomach, and had items thrown at them.
Now, the threats to their lives have forced San Francisco’s city inspectors to wear bulletproof vests and travel with police escorts on their daily missions to clean up the Mission and Market Street area.
