Space Elevators: That's what's up!

I first read an article in around 2005 about the possibility of space elevators being a real possibility in our lifetimes. At the time, I had just read the book "Friday" by Robert A. Heinlein. The space elevator was not a central theme in that story but it was a staple in the background.
It is becoming a nearer and nearer reality every day.
