Yes sanctioned fights do exist! I am Portuguese & Italian, & I was told as a child many people would try to fight me when I grew up, & that if I made the initial contact of aggression that I would be put in jail. I turned down many bait fights which would have landed me in jail, this just happened to be a real fight, the other guy lost 2/3rds of a tooth.
I called the bar owner the next day to apologize for being part of a disturbance in his bar. He was very kind about things, he said my calling about it was a gentlemanly thing to do, & he agreed that I did what I had to do in self defense. I was still a welcome patron at the bar this happened in during the rest of my time in New England, & if I am ever in the area again, I am sure I would still be welcome to spend money there.
I will not mention a specific location or name of the bar out of respect for the privacy of others involved. This happened during the Dark Ages of Covid.
I would gladly buy the bartender a drink sometime if she ever wants to come visit me on the island of Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal if she is ever in the area!
