In the end, who asks the question, who is the seeker, who is the experiencer, what is self? From wikipedia consciousness is a quality of the mind generally regarded to comprise qualities such as subjectivity, self-awareness, sentience, sapiens and the ability to perceive the relationship between oneself and one's environment.
There is one source of all experience and that source is consciousness. It is the substratum or the ground of being and out of that ground of being, out of that source consciousness all and everything unfolds and that reality is a multi-dimensional manifestation from the subtlest dimensions of unified holistic consciousness to the densest dimensions of fragmented consciousness.
There is one soul, one consciousness that is alive, a living consciousness, that... that expresses its life, because if there's no expression and it's, what is it, it's dead. But also what is it, well we don't know because there's so much motion around us and everywhere that would be confusing to think about an ultimate reality or God that had no power for self-expression, where would that leave us? So that ultimate reality is expressing its own inner feeling, its creative capacity in the form of the whole universe, not just the planet or the continent of the planet, or the solar system, the whole universe.
The primary intention in consciousness is to fully be itself, in order to be itself it has to experience itself, in order to experience itself it must create relative reality.
What's so unique about human beings is not only our capacity for consciousness, but it's our self-reflective capacity, in other words that we have this capacity of knowing that we know.
For all experiences relative; in order to be I must become. So we have being and becoming, positive and negative, interior/exterior, subjective/objective, masculine/feminine, yin/yang, however you want to frame it, all experience is relative. How can I know myself as I am except in relation to what I am not? So the whole of the journey or the play of consciousness is first to experience that which i am not so that relationally i can then experience that which I am.
Kashmir Shaivism, the beautiful philosophy of consciousness, it says that everything is consciousness and calls that consciousness Shiva. And we are Shiva, but then we become contracted and then we go from Shiva to the individual, which is Jiva. That's a nice rhyme, Shiva becomes Jiva, when he gets contracted. Jiva goes along leading his personal life, going after money and relationships and this and that, normal life, then suddenly he gets the awakening, or he wakes up that he doesn't know who he is - I want to know who i am! - and he meets the spiritual path, he meets a master and then he practices meditation, inquiry, whatever practices practices, and then he goes back to Shiva; he gets rid of the constraints, the blocks, the limitations, returns to Shiva. So that's the whole story of Kashmir Shaivism.
