What is the European Digital Identity Wallet?

The European Commission explains that European digital identity wallets are personal applications serving as digital wallets, offering citizens the option to authenticate themselves electronically and digitally manage their identification data and official documents. These can include such things as driving licences, medical prescriptions and academic diplomas. Many people are already using digital wallets on their smartphones to store boarding passes when travelling or to manage virtual bank cards for more convenient transactions.

Although these digital wallets, often provided by online platforms, allow users to log on to various online services – such as online shopping or media viewing – they do not always give users full control over the data bring shared when they identify themselves to use these services. What’s more, there is currently a lack of harmonisation between the various electronic identification portfolios offered by EU Member States. Under the new rules, the European digital identity portfolios issued by the Member States will be accessible to all. This development aims to enable citizens across the European Union to establish their identity in a convenient way, whether for accessing online services, sharing digital documents or simply verifying a specific piece of personal data, such as age, without disclosing their full identity or other personal information. Citizens will have absolute control over the data they share and who receives that information at any given time.
