A person who doesn't defend you while someone slanders you is your enemy too

I had a lot of so called friends play both sides of the fence, or stay silent while people talked and never defended me throughout the years. I don't consider them friends.

I usually defend myself, but usually the gossipers never came to me about, they went to other people and talked about me behind my back.

I tried to see it from my "friends" side. Maybe they are scared, and want to be liked to have friends. Ok. Then the older I got, the more I realized, ok. It's time to have some backbone. You either stand up for something or fall for anything. You are either with me, or against me, there's no going down the middle or playing both sides.

They are opportunists/acquaintances that didn't care about me as a person, or cared about how their actions affected other people. I'm done with playing with people like this.
