Charles Dickens was perhaps one of the most famous writers of the Victorian period and possibly in the whole of English literature. He is the author of full-length novels, including 'Oliver Twist', 'Great Expectations', 'Bleak House', 'Little Dorrit' and David Copperfield. 'A Christmas Carol' was published on 19 December 1843. The story is full of memorable characters such as Jacob Marley, Scrooge, Bob Crachit and Tiny Tim. Not to mention the Ghost of Christmas Past!

The first edition was printed at Dickens' own expense and sold out by Christmas eve. Dickens got another print run out as soon as possible, and it was still being read after the holiday. Further editions followed immediately, and it continued to sell well into the spring of 1844.
