Masterfully gothic with looming imagery and sinister undertones. The Black Cat, as always with Edgar Allan Poe's work, the bad guy gets his comeuppance at the paws of a Black Cat and in this case the malign agent of destiny, the fuliginous feline nemesis casts huge shadows from dancing flames. A cracking story with overblown language and the opportunity for the humble narrator to indulge his purple tendencies of the overblown, overstated and overweening. You can't beat Poe for histrionics and this has them in spades. Purrrrr! Who's on team Black Cat?
