With the recent release of the new Napoleon film, I thought it would be interesting to talk about the financial state of France when Napoleon took over as First Consul and how he was able to turn France around from financial ruin.

As is always the case government debt, inflation, and high taxes had triggered the revolution but the immediate solution of printing paper money in the form of Assignats and Mandats proved disastrous and led to the rise of Napoleon.
