Adventure Now Season 4, Episode 11 - Land of ice and fire

Hello and welcome to the 11th episode of the 4th season of Adventure Now!

In this episode we arrive on in the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), in the harbour on the largest island, Heimaey. A newly born volcano, Eldfell, nearly closed the entrance to this harbour in 1973. A massive human effort of pumping sea water over the flowing lava and the grace of Mother Nature, who decided that 6 month of spewing lava was enough, saved the harbour from becoming inaccessible. Eldfell is now but a hollow crater made of crumbly red rock, with pockets of hot air and steam coming from the inside of the Earth.

We start our adventure on Heimaey by climbing the mountain to the north of the town, where we admire colonies of puffins and amazing views of the surrounding archipelago and the nearby south coast of mainland Iceland. A few days later we scramble up the inner walls of the volcanic crater.

Our last day on the island leads us around the trail to the entrance of the harbour, where the lava from the Eldfell stopped. Soon after we fuel Altor up and leave bound for Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides.

Filmed in July and August 2023 using a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, DJI Pocket, a Rhode microphone, and edited with iMovie.
