Super Mario RPG (Switch) - Part 1: Deja Vu

With my 2nd Quest playthrough of Epic Battle Fantasy 4 finished, I thought I'd take a break before my Final Chapter (3rd Quest) playthrough to play another RPG I've wanted to play on this channel for a long time but never got around to. But with the newly-released remake on Nintendo Switch, now seems like the perfect time! Welcome to Mario's very first foray into the JRPG genre, aptly named Super Mario RPG!

Originally released on SNES in 1996, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was co-developed by Nintendo and Square Enix as one of the last games released on the console. It follows typical RPG format with exploration, a rich story, turn-based battles, the works. However, it also adds the new "Timed Hits" mechanic, where if you hit the button at the right time, you can make your attacks more powerful as well as reduce or even negate damage from most enemy attacks. The most common complaint about RPGs is the grind, but this particular RPG does not require any grinding, though it does put more importance on the timing system.

The Nintendo Switch remake released on November 17, 2023, and added many quality of life improvements, including an indicator over your character's head indicating the timing to do a timed attack or defense during an attack, as well as an indicator telling you when an enemy attack can't be blocked. It also adds a new type of attack called the Triple Attack, which you can charge up with successful Timed Hits. Which Triple Attack you use depends on your current party setup. It also adds some post-game content with much more difficult rematches against certain bosses.

The story starts out like any Mario game. Princess Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser, and Mario goes to Bowser's castle to save her. However, during the battle, a giant sword crashes from the sky into the castle, sending Mario, Bowser, and Peach off in different directions and destroying the bridge to the castle. So now Mario must take the long way around. First stop: Mushroom Kingdom!
