There are early tells that Narcissists give between the "love bombing" - that I call bait/hook bombing and the falling in love stage in significant other relationships around the (or a) "commitment" point. Saying something out of the blue, catching you off-guard because it is so unexpected sets up a series of events that lead you to know something is wrong but has also set the trap of cognitive dissonance.
