This is because cathedrals are where the bishops have seats.

The Latin word cathedra, which is where we get the word cathdral from…is actually Latin for chair. So why is a cathedral which is a very big church run by a Bishop real name a chair. Why would you call a church…a chair…well, because cathedrals were run by Bishops, and a bishops church is where where his seat of power was. Quite literally, his chair, more like a throne was in his rather large church. And so the bishops church was refered to as a place where his chair was …his cathedra …which is why big church’s run by bishops are called Cathedrals!
