The Machrie Moor Megaliths

In the summer of 2022 we visited the Isle of Arran, a beautiful and lesser known island off the coast of Scotland, that is covered in structures. We explored the Machrie Moor Megaliths, a collection of monuments described as a show piece of megalithic sites with several different styles of structure, from concentric circles, circles from small grey boulders, the remains of circles built from red sandstone, former cairns, dolmen and single standing stones, and the site was originally started with timber circles.

The area has been inhabited for 1000s of years, with estimated dates of the sites ranging from 3200 – 4000 years old, with cists and human remains added to the sites in more recent years. Only a tiny part of the moor has been excavated, so it is highly likely that there are many other archaeological remains beneath and between the visible sites

The sites have been associated with ceremonial activities and like so many megalithic sites around the world there is potential solar and lunar alignments at certain times of the year.
