When folate is ingested, either as a natural food source or as synthetic folic acid, it must be enzymatically converted into its bioactive form as l-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, also known as l-methylfolate or 5-MTHF. Increasing evidence has shown that supplementation with l-methylfolate has many important advantages over synthetic folic acid. L-methylfolate is well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; it has a higher bioavailability compared to synthetic folic acid; it’s bioavailability is not affected by metabolic or genetic defects; and it’s bioavailability is not hampered by drug interactions that inhibit synthetic folic acid metabolism. In addition, l-methylfolate is the only form of folate able to cross the blood-brain barrier where it plays an important role in the production of brain neurotransmitters (e.g. dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin) that regulate mood and behavior.
