Ancient Egypt, one of the world's oldest civilizations, emerged around 3100 BCE along the banks of the Nile River. Around the 11th century BCE, Egypt faced invasions from various foreign powers, including the Assyrians, Persians, and Greeks. In 332 BCE, Alexander the Great conquered Egypt, leading to the Ptolemaic dynasty.

Egypt came under Roman rule in 30 BCE after the death of Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of the Ptolemaic dynasty. The Romans controlled Egypt until the rise of Islam in the 7th century CE.

Under Islamic rule, Egypt became a center of cultural, intellectual, and economic activity. The country flourished under various dynasties such as the Abbasids and the Fatimids. During the medieval period, Egypt played a vital role in trade and scholarly pursuits, with famous centers like Cairo's Al-Azhar University.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Egypt experienced European colonization and political unrest. The country gained independence from British colonial rule in 1952 and has since undergone various political and social changes.
