In this video , I discuss the Epoch Times health article “is the Goliath in autism research about to fall?”

This article discussed a new study from June 2023 in Nature Neuroscience that was a meta-analysis of 25 autism studies confirming the association between autism spectrum disorder and gut microbiome changes.

The article quoted one doctor who noted the autism epidemic could not possibly be genetic. It discusses the idea of epi-genetics and how toxins in the environment and genetic predisposition can interplay with gut health and gut microbiome.

It cites one particular article which provides an interesting mechanism of action: “Short chain fatty acid fermentation products of the gut Microbiome, implications in autism spectrum disorder“. In this article researchers investigated the association between propionic acid/SCFA’s and autism spectrum disorder. They discussed the presence of Clostridia, Bacteriodetes, Desulfovibrio in the gut microbiome of those with ASD as well and the eventual role of mitochondrial dysfunction, present in most individuals with autism. For their study they gave SCFA products to rats and looked at the motor, and behavioral changes and noted increased neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, decreased glutathione and changes in phospholipids/ acylcarnitine.

I finished up by discussing the issue with the movement that discourages holistic intervention in autism as “pseudoscience” and how harmful this is knowing autism does in fact have a biological basis. I shared an anecdotal story of a meme shared online and how this is counterproductive in helping individuals heal their bodies to better utilize their minds.

Finally I discussed how the push to diagnose full functional adults with autism, despite their denial of developmental delays in childhood , is harmful to those who truly have the biological processes at play that cause the disabling symptoms of autism.
