Canada has increased its involvement in maritime security by joining a U.S.-led coalition to protect shipping in the Red Sea from Iranian-backed Houthi attacks. Canadian defense spokesperson James Bezan criticized the move due to the absence of Canadian naval ships, attributing it to naval unpreparedness. The initiative, "Operation Prosperity Guardian," includes multiple countries and focuses on pivotal Red Sea and Gulf of Aden routes, which have seen a rise in Houthi and Hamas aggression, especially near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, forcing ships to detour.

Houthi hostilities have led to increased operating costs and insurance premiums, disrupting a vital maritime channel in the Suez Canal that handles 15% of global trade. In response, companies like BP and Frontline are rerouting to avoid risk and ensure the flow of maritime commerce.
