Peru seizes 4,001 turtles bound for Indonesia

Among the thousands of turtles seized at Jorge Chavez International Airport, SERFOR authorities found 463 animals of the Charapa species (Podocnemis expansa) whose legal origin could not be confirmed.

In addition, it was determined that the age indicated on the permit issued for the Taricaya turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) differed from the estimated age of the specimens inspected.

Following the seizure carried out by SERFOR in coordination with the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT), all the animals were handed over in temporary custody to an authorized breeding centre in Lima.
