Winter Solstice is Dec 21. The Sun rises in the same spot for 3 consecutive days before reversing course and days once again begin to get longer as nights get shorter, a new solar year is born on the 25th. The "mysteries" have to do with spiritual rebirth of the soul.

In mystery school religions God is light, the only light, the universal light, hidden from mortals because it is pure, although omnipresent. Sun or fire worship are metaphors and should not be taken literally, they are symbols of Divine luminosity, the light within each of us.
