Ukrainian soldiers with war wounds determined to recover

"My end goal is to stand up", said Marine Andriy, a Ukrainian serviceman who lost both his legs on the battlefield and is now determined to work hard towards recovery in a hospital in Vinnytsia, a city southwest of Kyiv.

With the support of rehabilitation activities, including physiotherapy and psychological support, he said he was feeling much better then when he arrived two months earlier.

According to hospital head and surgeon Dr. Yurii Bezsmertnyi, more than 1,200 patients who lost up to three limbs were treated at the hospital since the beginning of the war in February 2022.

Almost half of the hospital's patients, most of them soldiers who suffered amputations, need additional surgical assistance when they arrive, said Bezsmertnyi, adding that he was noticing an increase of high-leg, post-tourniquet amputations, which often necessitated more complex rehabilitation processes.

The hospital was supported by the independent International Medical Humanitarian Organization "Medecins sans frontiers" (MSF) at the time of filming of the story.

During the time patients spend at the hospital, they get prepared to receive prosthetic limbs, and learn to adapt to their injury and the far-reaching impact the injury has on their lives and future.
