Chaste Chess Episode 0: Making an SDL program with a checkerboard

I have an idea of making a small chess game. It's nothing that would compete with other platforms for playing chess. After all, we already have the world's greatest website for that: chess.com

Instead, this is a programming exercise for me so that I can learn how something like it might be implemented with C and SDL. I have made other games before but nothing quite like this. This will test my skill as a programmer as well as show the work that must go into the other chess games already available. I am streaming the process of how I start working on this program. I'm not even sure how far I will go but I do love the game of chess almost as much as Tetris. My time playing chess has inspired me to start on this project, no matter how futile it is.
