Stationary high builds over the rockies to block pacific polar airmasses from impeding the system. This allowed for the warm eastern flowing tropical jetstream to jumpstart rotation, as it's squeezed in place over the midwest. A cold arctic airmass over Canada moves southward to keep the system locked in the states. Amplifying convection.

A few days later, the blocking system over the rockies is lifted and allows the system to flow off into Atlantic.. Interesting how every year these unnatural systems seems to form around the holidays.
