Sharks and Key Deer: Big Pine Key, Florida Keys

Pine Key is home to the National Key Deer Refuge. The Key deer is America's smallest deer and is found only in the lower Florida Keys. The majority of the deer population are found on this island. When Key deer were listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1967, there were fewer than 50 remaining in the wild. While driving on Big Pine Key, care must be taken to avoid hitting the diminutive Key Deer. These tiny whitetail deer evolved to be dwarfs after thousands of years living on the island.
