There is a large-scale push in the United States for new policies of universal basic income. Some of these are being proposed as solutions to climate change. Other forms of this are being proposed as solutions to a future where artificial intelligence has rendered many American jobs obsolete. Either way, the new form of “wealth redistribution” could usher in a new program for a nationwide welfare state.
