A forthcoming total solar eclipse is anticipated in North America on April 8, 2024, marking the occurrence just seven years after the previous one, according to the American Astronomical Society.
Cincinnati is positioned close to the trajectory where a total solar eclipse can be observed. Nearby cities, including Dayton and Indianapolis, will also have a prime view of the total eclipse.
Similar to the 2017 event, this solar eclipse will involve the moon completely obstructing the sun, resulting in a temporary transformation of day into night.
The 2017 total solar eclipse held significance as the first to touch the "Lower 48" since 1979 and the initial one to traverse the entire U.S. from coast to coast since 1918, as reported by the AAS.
In 2024, the moon's shadow, approximately 115 miles wide, is projected to traverse Mexico, move northeast from Texas to Maine, and eventually darken the Canadian Maritimes.
A partial solar eclipse will be observable to a broad audience across North America, provided they have clear skies devoid of clouds.
The total solar eclipse is scheduled for Monday afternoon, April 8, 2024. The total duration of the eclipse will be around 4 1/2 minutes, and it will only be visible to those situated within the path defined by the moon's shadow.
Preceding and following totality, portions of the sun will be partially eclipsed for over an hour before and after the complete eclipse.
For those wondering where to watch, the path of totality for the 2024 solar eclipse is anticipated to be wider than that of most eclipses. While the totality path of the 2017 solar eclipse was approximately 71 miles (115 km) wide, the totality path for the 2024 solar eclipse is expected to span about 124 miles (200 km) and will extend across 13 states, ranging from Texas to New Hampshire.
In Ohio, the point of greatest duration for the total solar eclipse will be in Avon Lake, Ohio, in Lorain County, which is 23 miles west of Cleveland.
