Is Wokeness / Progressivism a Religion?

I've heard many a conservative / moderate commentator derisively refer to leftist politics as a "new age religion", or something to similar effect. What's amusing to me is that these same people will then turn around and loudly go "GIVE YERSELF UNTO JESUS!" and the irony will be utterly lost on them.
But, just because the duck can't swim doesn't mean the water isn't wet. So is there any truth to this idea? Hopefully I can at least offer a jumping off point for an actually thoughtful discussion around this point.
