Black Mountain is the highest point in Kentucky, with an elevation of 4,145 feet. It is situated in Harlan County, Kentucky, near the border with Virginia in the Appalachian Mountains. When we went to climb the mountain, there was still a permit system in place. This is no longer the case. The state now owns the summit and does not require a waiver to climb to the peak.
