The first third-party in the United States was a party formed around a single issue, eliminating the influence of Freemasonry in America. The party was founded in 1828, and it was a popular movement throughout the decade of the 1830's. The men who organized this party, and those who joined viewed Freemasons as a threat to the republican system of government. They also believed there was a conspiracy to control America by placing Masons in all positions of power. The party and the movement began to lose steam after the election of the founder of the Democratic Party, and Freemason, Andrew Jackson. Many of those who had been a part of the Anti-Masonic Party joined the Whig Party, which later became the Republican Party. However, men such as Thaddeus Stevens, who was an early leader in both the Anti-Masonic Party and the Republican Party, believed in the Masonic conspiracy until the day they died.
