Episode 226 - TIMBERLAKE AND TIME
In this segment of "The Thick and Mystic Moment" podcast, the host Robert John Hadfield discusses the concept of time as a precious commodity, drawing inspiration from the 2011 movie "In Time" starring Justin Timberlake. The movie is set in the year 2169, where humans have conquered mortality and aging, making time the new currency. People are given a certain amount of time to live, and they earn more time by working. If their time runs out, they die instantly.
Hadfield delves into the disparity in the movie between those who live day-to-day barely making enough time to survive and those with an abundance of time, effectively making them immortal. He focuses on a scene where Timberlake's character, living a life of constant urgency due to time scarcity, is asked by a character with abundant time what he would do if he had as much time. Timberlake's character responds that he would stop watching time and wouldn't waste it.
The host reflects on these responses and their implications. For those with little time, not having to constantly watch time would mean relief from stress and survival mode. In contrast, for those with an abundance of time, not watching time signifies a lack of urgency, potentially leading to a wasteful life. Hadfield argues that this mirrors our own lives, where we often fall into a false sense of security about having ample time, leading to procrastination and lack of urgency.
He also references a conversation between Neil deGrasse Tyson and Larry King, where Tyson emphasizes that the awareness of mortality brings focus and urgency to life. The podcast then relates this to an anecdote about Bernard Berenson, a 91-year-old art historian who lived a life full of purpose and productivity, illustrating how a lack of spare time can lead to a fulfilling life.
The episode concludes with the message that success often comes from saying no to most things, allowing for prioritization and efficient use of time. Hadfield urges listeners to view time as a precious, limited resource, emphasizing the importance of making each moment count and avoiding the curse of wasting time due to perceived abundance.
