Deteriorating Eyesight in Developed Nations at Pandemic Levels

Today on www.LIBRadio.com it has come to my attention the high percentage of young people that need glasses to correct their vision, compared to what I witnessed as a child. The data shows that this problem has increased by 5% each decade since the 1940s, reaching as high as 80% now in East Asian countries. What is causing this pandemic of vision impairment?
